The map
Two main islands connected by bridges. Mainland (Little Havana, Little Haiti, downtown, port) and beach (Ocean Beach with the art deco strip, Vice Point with the mall, Starfish Island with mansions).
Modest by modern standards. Genre-defining at the time.
Influence on GTA 6
Geographic shape carries forward - barrier island plus mainland, connected by bridges. Visual coding carries forward - the art deco strip in particular. Period setting does not - 2002 was 1986; 2026 is contemporary.
