GTA 6 map modding isn't a thing yet. The game hasn't shipped on PC. The toolchain hasn't been reverse-engineered. But every previous GTA has gone through the same arc: console release, PC release, modding tools mature, custom content explodes. This guide covers what to expect at each stage.

If you want to build for GTA 6 when the time comes, this is your orientation. For the wider GTA 6 modding scene beyond just maps, see GTAModding.net.

The realistic timeline

Console launch first - Rockstar's stated launch is console-only at the start. PC release follows by some months (the gap with GTA 5 was around 18 months; GTA 6 may be shorter). Modding tools start appearing within weeks of PC release as the community begins reverse-engineering the engine. We track the broader phase-by-phase rollout in our GTA 6 map release timeline.

Basic mods (asset replacements, texture swaps, vehicle ports) appear first. Custom MLO interiors take longer - typically 3-6 months. Full custom maps and total conversions can take 12-24 months. The GTA 6 modding tools timeline will likely follow this same pattern.

What tools will exist

Expect a mix of community-built tools (MLO editors, model importers, script frameworks) and Rockstar-tolerated mod loaders. The relationship between modders and Rockstar has historically been wary - Rockstar has shut down certain mods (online-affecting cheats) but tolerated single-player mods.

OpenIV-equivalent for GTA 6 is the most important first tool to watch for. It enables the asset extraction and editing that everything else builds on. Map-specific tools (CodeWalker for GTA 5 was the gold standard) will follow.

What to learn now if you want to mod GTA 6

If you want to build GTA 6 maps when the time comes, get fluent with: 3D modelling (Blender is the community standard), texture work (Substance Painter or similar), basic scripting (Lua and JS dominate the GTA scripting scene), and game-engine concepts generally. None of this requires waiting for GTA 6.

The skills transfer. People who built MLOs for GTA 5 will be the first to ship working MLOs for GTA 6. If you're starting from scratch, the wider GTA 6 modding scene has tutorials and resources you can use today on previous GTAs while waiting for GTA 6 tooling.

Where to publish custom map content

When custom GTA 6 map mods become real, GTA 6 map downloads will be the dedicated home for downloadable map content - MLOs, custom zones, race tracks, RP map packs. Mod publishing platforms typically take 3-6 months after the modding scene matures to become genuinely useful (it takes that long for enough quality content to be uploaded).

For now, document your work on the GTA 6 modding scene forums and Discord. Building reputation in the community before you ship your first map mod makes a real difference to whether anyone downloads it.
