GTA 6's map doesn't arrive in a single drop. It unfolds in phases - console launch first, PC later, then modding tools, then mature custom content. Knowing the order matters if you're planning when to play, when to start modding, or when to wait. This page lays out the realistic timeline.
For the broader map context see the GTA 6 map guide. For modding-specific timing see the GTA 6 map modding guide.
Phase 1: Console launch
Rockstar's stated launch is console-only at the start - PS5 and Xbox Series. This is where you get the official map first. Expect the experience to be polished, performance-tuned for current consoles, and missing only the modding layer that's PC-only.
Console players get every region: Vice City, Leonida wetlands, the Florida Keys, the rural inland zones, and all official content. What console doesn't get: custom maps, MLO interiors, total conversions - those are PC-only.
Phase 2: PC release
PC release follows console by some months. With GTA 5, the gap was around 18 months. Rockstar may shorten that for GTA 6 - the company has shifted toward shorter PC delays in recent releases. Realistic estimate: 6-18 months after console launch, depending on Rockstar's strategy.
PC release also unlocks the early modding work. Within weeks of PC launch, basic asset replacements and texture mods appear. Map-specific tools take longer.
Phase 3: Modding tools mature
3-6 months after PC release, the GTA 6 modding toolchain reaches the level where serious custom content is buildable. OpenIV-equivalent tools, MLO editors, and map editors arrive in this window. This is when MLO interiors start shipping and small map zone additions appear.
Total conversions and full custom maps still don't exist yet - they take longer. Expect the bulk of map mods at this stage to be MLO-style additions to the official map rather than wholesale replacements.
Phase 4: RP servers and curated map packs
12-18 months after PC release, the roleplay server scene reaches critical mass. Servers commission custom MLOs, build themed zones, and run heavily modded versions of the map. This is the phase where you start seeing 'custom GTA 6 worlds' rather than 'GTA 6 with mods.'
Curated map download hubs reach maturity in this window too. GTA 6 map downloads will be the destination once enough vetted content is uploaded to be useful.
Phase 5: Total conversions and the long tail
12-24 months after PC release for the first total conversions to reach playable quality. Liberty City rebuilt in the GTA 6 engine. The original 2002 Vice City rebuilt with modern fidelity. Real-world cities ported (London, Tokyo, NYC are perennial candidates). These are huge multi-year projects and only land at the very end of the timeline.
The long tail extends indefinitely. GTA 5's map mod scene is still active 13 years after launch. GTA 6's will follow the same pattern - the map you're playing 5 years post-launch will be very different from the launch map.
